Richard Tetrault, master wood cut printmaker, is returning to Salt Spring for a two-day weekend workshop. He will guide participants through the process of making a 4-colour reduction wood cut print. His workshops here have been very popular so sign up soon! All materials will be provided.

The course will familiarize participants with carving tools, sharpening, papers, inks, color-mixing and registration. It is designed for all levels of experience. Participants are asked to bring designs/sketches for a four-color reduction print, at 9” X 12”. All other materials will be supplied.

Course outline:

Day 1:

Incorporating a range of chisels and other tools, we will explore the broad range of effects possible in woodblock printing. Participants will create their prints using the reduction process.

1- A short talk on printmaking, highlighting some of the properties of relief printmaking, including examples. Discussion of color-printing methods and the broad ranges of possible effects.

2- Starting from a concept drawn onto a woodblock, image will be clarified using Indian ink. This provides the basis for all of the subsequent carving.

3- The area that is to be white (paper color) is first cut away from the block.

4- Starting from the most distant, or subtle, color tone, the first print is made in a series, this number determines the final edition number ( 3 or 4 prints).

5- Blocks are cleaned of ink. The next cutting will ‘reveal’ the previously printed color.

6- The second color is printed, and the blocks cleaned for cutting.

Day 2:

7- The third cutting, with the printing of the third color.

8- Blocks are cleaned, then cutting for the fourth and final color.

9- The printing of the fourth color, and the completing of the edition.

Group discussion around process, revelations and editioning a print etc.
